If you’ve ever been to the Range for a General Members shoot to sight in a rifle, or test out a new load, you will have met at least one of our Range Officers.

On a rotation, there are 20 Range Officers who, rain, hail or shine, are there day after day.

Why do they volunteer? Here are some things that our Main Range Range Officers have to say:

To give back to my community” – Wendy

“Volunteering on the main range as an RO allows me to help others enjoy the same sport I do as well as giving support to the Association.” – Kim

“There is great satisfaction in working, especially with Juniors and beginners in our shooting sports. They are the future of our sport. I regard it, as with so many other roles I have filled over the decades, to be a duty. That said it has overwhelmingly been a very satisfying duty. I found as in my other teaching roles, the reward for me is in the student’s achievements.” – Ross

“I have been instructing in firearms for 30 odd years. The reason I keep attending, even being in acute pain with the osteo arthritis in my feet, is the feedback after assisting people of all the various shapes, ages, levels of experience. The people who gain understanding of the various topics, from zeroing to reloading is gob smacking” – Mark

“To help encourage and inform others about shooting/hunting in a safe non-threatening environment. The majority of shooters on the range are very social, with a high level of comradeship on display most days. During COVID the range was the safest environment in the ACT as it reeked of two things that destroy the virus, firearm cleaning products and ultraviolet C. Helping people to learn and experiment in a safe environment is reward enough.” – Wayne
